A separate study on Adrenal steroid hormone concentrations in dogs with hair cycle arrest (Alopecia X) before and during treatment with melatonin and mitotane looked at how melatonin shifts adrenal steroid patterns during regrowth. Neither of these papers is about anxiety. They’re about a hormone doing what it does mechanistically, in a condition where that mechanism happens to be the problem. I bring this up first because it’s the strongest ground melatonin stands on, and it’s rarely the reason anyone buys it.

The anxiety use case has support too, just narrower than most marketing implies. A prospective clinical trial on Gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine combination prior to hospital visits decreased stress scores in aggressive and anxious dogs in a prospective clinical trial found reduced stress scores in dogs given the combination before a vet visit. Cureus: A Systematic Review of Ashwagandha and Stress Reduction concluded the herb has a moderate positive impact on stress reduction and cognitive performance across multiple RCTs. So the honest ranking, mechanism by mechanism, looks like this. Melatonin: strong dog-specific data for hair-cycle disorders, situational support only for anxiety, usually as part of a combination. L-theanine: the most direct anxiety-outcome evidence, though drawn mainly from human trials. Ashwagandha: a genuine but moderate stress-reduction signal. Chamomile: traditional use that hasn’t yet been proven out in controlled dog studies. None of these treats an anxiety disorder the way a prescription anxiolytic does, and I’d resist any framing that blurs supporting normal stress response with treating a diagnosed neurologic or behavioral condition. If a dog’s anxiety is severe enough to disrupt daily life, that’s a conversation for a veterinary behaviorist, not a supplement aisle decision. Melatonin earns its place in a vet’s toolkit for hair-cycle disorders and as one piece of a short-term, situational stress protocol, not as a daily anxiety supplement standing on its own. If the goal is everyday calm around low-grade stressors, I’d look first at L-theanine, given how directly its anxiety data maps onto the outcome owners actually want. If the goal is a specific, diagnosed hair-cycle condition, melatonin has genuine dosing studies behind it that the calming-chew category simply doesn’t share. Either way, matching the mechanism to the actual problem beats reaching for whatever bottle is trending this month, and that’s a habit I’d like to see more owners build going forward.
