Picture a young German Shepherd who cleans his bowl twice a day, begs for more, and keeps losing weight anyway. His stools turn pale, loose, and voluminous, and the smell carries across the yard. His people assume it’s a food allergy. What their veterinarian eventually finds is that his pancreas has largely stopped releasing the digestive enzymes his food depends on. This is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI, and it is the one situation where digestive enzymes for dogs move from a marketing idea to a genuine medical need.

That scenario is worth holding onto, because it frames the whole subject. Enzymes are a precise tool for a real deficit, not a daily sprinkle for an ordinary gut.

What digestive enzymes actually do

The pancreas releases three main workhorses into the small intestine: amylase, which helps break down starches; protease, which handles proteins; and lipase, which handles fats. A healthy dog makes these in generous supply, and food therapy in an ordinary patient rarely needs any outside help with them. When the pancreas can’t keep up, undigested fat and protein pass straight through, which is why the classic picture is weight loss despite a big appetite, paired with greasy, bulky stool.

When enzymes are genuinely needed

EPI in dogs is most often caused by pancreatic acinar atrophy, common in German Shepherds, rough Collies, and Eurasiers, with chronic pancreatitis behind many other cases. Vets confirm it with a blood test, a low serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI), rather than guessing from stool alone. As the 2024 JAVMA review by Cridge and colleagues puts it, “EPI is treated by pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, nutritional management (low-residue diets with moderate fat content), and supplementation of cobalamin.”

The enzymes themselves are usually powdered porcine pancreatic extract, mixed into food at each meal and started at roughly one teaspoon per ten kilograms of body weight. This replacement supports digestion rather than repairing the pancreas, and it works reasonably well. A 2024 Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine review reports that about 60 to 65 percent of dogs respond well, with partial response in roughly 17 percent and poor response in 23 percent. Formulation matters too, since that same review notes up to 85 percent of enzyme activity can be lost to stomach acid before it reaches the intestine.

Enzymes alone don’t reset the gut

Replacing enzymes fixes the digestion step, but it doesn’t automatically restore microbial balance further down. The JAVMA review is candid that “future studies are needed to further understand the causes of persistent dysbiosis in animals with EPI following initiation of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy.” Many of these dogs also run low on cobalamin (vitamin B12); a 2022 trial found oral supplementation is a workable alternative to injections in dogs with EPI or chronic enteropathy. Probiotics are often layered in to help support balance, though the response is inconsistent, and a 2025 canine probiotic pilot reported that “diversity metrics did not distinguish non-responders from responders.” For the enzyme question, the lesson is simple: enzymes are one lever in a whole-patient plan, not the entire plan.

What about a healthy dog?

Here is where the supplement aisle and the evidence part ways. In a 2017 Journal of Nutritional Science study, exogenous enzyme supplements “did not significantly increase digestibility of a typical commercial dry diet in healthy adult dogs and routine use of such products is not recommended.” A dog with a normal pancreas already makes what it needs, so an over-the-counter scoop may support little beyond the owner’s peace of mind. A National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) quality seal tells you a product meets manufacturing standards; it does not promise the enzymes do anything for a dog that isn’t deficient in the first place.

If your vet does recommend enzymes

A few things separate a serious product from a hopeful one. Check the source first: animal-derived porcine pancreatic enzymes are the studied standard, while plant and microbial enzymes remain a promising but not-yet-established alternative. Favor honest structure and function labeling, wording like “supports normal digestion,” over any product promising to treat or cure disease, which is a red flag. Confirm the label carries a NASC seal and, ideally, third-party testing. Plan to mix powder into the meal, since that is how the studied dosing was delivered. And start only after a TLI diagnosis, so you are treating a confirmed shortfall rather than a suspicion.

The bottom line: digestive enzymes earn their place when a dog’s own pancreas falls short, so the decision to use them belongs in a conversation with your veterinarian rather than on a shelf.

For a diagnosed dog, follow your vet's product choice.

Can digestive enzymes cure my dog's EPI?

No. Enzyme replacement supports digestion by supplying what the pancreas can no longer make; it does not repair the pancreas. EPI is managed for life, typically alongside a suitable diet and cobalamin (vitamin B12) supplementation, and it is best framed as ongoing support rather than a fix.
