Gas is one of those problems owners tolerate far longer than they should, usually because it seems too trivial to mention and too stubborn to fix. In an integrative exam room I treat it the way I treat any digestive complaint, as a window into how the whole patient is eating, moving, and fermenting food. Most of the time the odor becomes manageable once you know which lever to pull first.

Two practical points matter here. First, digestibility beats “premium” marketing; the real question is how completely the food is absorbed in the small intestine, not what the bag costs. Second, change food slowly. A sudden switch is itself a common trigger, so I move patients over a week to ten days, tilting the ratio toward the new food in small increments. Dairy, fatty leftovers, and hard-to-digest chews come out during that window, since they load the colon with exactly the substrate you are trying to reduce.

Aerophagia, the swallowing of air, is the quietly overlooked half of this problem. A dog that inhales its meal in twenty seconds takes in a surprising amount of air, and much of it leaves the way you would expect. Brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers are especially prone, because their conformation pushes them to mouth-breathe and gulp air with every bite.

I have watched this step alone resolve mild cases that owners were ready to medicate. Supplements are the layer I add last, and I frame them honestly as “may help support,” not cure. Probiotics are the usual first request. They can support a more balanced microbiome, though expectations should stay realistic; in a 2025 canine trial, diversity metrics did not distinguish the dogs that responded from those that did not, a useful reminder that response is individual and never guaranteed.

Digestive enzymes are a more targeted tool with a narrower indication. In dogs with true exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, the pancreas fails to secrete enough enzymes, and gas is a minor footnote next to weight loss and greasy stool. That condition is treated with pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, nutritional management using low-residue diets of moderate fat content, and cobalamin supplementation, a genuinely medical protocol rather than a wellness add-on. For the ordinary gassy dog with a normal pancreas, over-the-counter enzymes are far less predictable. Odor-directed additives like charcoal, yucca, and zinc sit in their own category, worth reaching for when smell is the complaint and largely silent on volume.

Most flatulence is benign, and the exceptions are worth naming plainly.
