So which glucosamine form should actually be on the label?

Short answer, since this publication doesn’t bury the verdict: if I’m reading a joint supplement label and I see plain “glucosamine HCl” with nothing else backing it up, I keep reading. If I see glucosamine sulfate — ideally paired with chondroitin — I pay more attention. That’s not brand loyalty. It’s what the dosing and outcome data actually favor, even though HCl is cheaper to manufacture and shows up in more products for exactly that reason.

Where HCl still earns a place on the shelf

I don’t think glucosamine HCl is a scam ingredient, and I’d push back on anyone who frames it that way. It’s cheaper to source, it’s more concentrated per milligram, and some manufacturers use it specifically so they can hit a higher total glucosamine number on the label without inflating pill count — which matters for compliance with a big dog that needs several chews a day. If you’ve got a dog on a tight pill-burden budget, or a picky eater who’ll only tolerate one chew, an HCl-based product dosed correctly isn’t unreasonable.
